By developing a potentially devastating anti-satellite weapon, Moscow poses an indiscriminate global risk

By Lady Olga Maitland

US Space Force Lieutenant General John Shaw has allowed us to circulate his recent article on Russia’s new nuclear EMP anti-satellite weapon.  A snapshot is below, and the full article is available via the link.

Russia's development of a new nuclear-based antisatellite weapon has prompted international condemnation, marking a significant departure from its historical role in space and raising serious concerns about its global irresponsibility.

This action represents the culmination of a long decline in Russia's space leadership, which began in the early 2000s and accelerated rapidly over the past four years, despite a legacy of innovation and past cooperation, such as on the International Space Station.

Recent behaviour, including a destructive kinetic antisatellite test in 2021 and the current pursuit of a nuclear EMP device, demonstrates a pattern of recklessness that threatens the space domain and violates international treaties, including the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

The United States and its allies must now employ a comprehensive strategy, leveraging diplomatic, economic, and military tools, to deter this threat and prevent Russia from holding global space infrastructure hostage.
